“a STORY OF COMMUNITY, FAMILY, AND THEIR PETERHEAD BOAT.”

SEA ICE AND WOODEN BOATS

DOCUMENTARY FILM

1989

27 MINUTES

HIGH DEFINITION (HD)

“Peterhead has a new look, a fresh coat of paint, and a new generation of workers to make her shine.”

A story story for, and deeply cherished by the Inuit People, this film shines light on the backbone of Northern coastal communities: the Peterhead Boat. Constructed originally for the Hudson Bay Company for Bowhead whaling, these sturdy boats became a vital part of the Inuit’s lives. First Nation and Westerners became “partners in the hunt” - showing one another how to survive (and thrive) the cold, as well as how to push out further than ever before using Nova Scotian vessels and Scottish engineering.

Now, the Hudson Bay Company is long gone. The Bowheads, almost extinct. But the Peterheads remain.
